Esteban Rojas, one of the 33 Chilean trapped miners since an Aug. 5 cave-in has sent a letter proposing to his long-time sweetheart.

Even though Rojas had actually wed Jessica Yanez 25 years ago, he had never given her the church wedding that is customary in Chile. Rojas and Yanez have 3 children and two grandchildren.

“Please keep praying that we get out of this alive. And when I do get out, we will buy a dress and get married,” he wrote on the scrap of paper.

The couple spoke shortly for half a minute over the phone on Sunday, a time that was used to start planning their wedding.

“I thought he was never going to ask me. We have talked about it before, but he never asked me,” Yanez said.

“He knows that however long it takes, I’ll wait for him, because with him I’ve been through good and bad.”

Well, it’s official! After four years together, Nicole Richie and Joel Madden are finally tying the knot in diamond encrusted Hollywood style! The famous celebutante socialite, who is the adopted daughter of singer Lionel Richie, became officially affianced to her musician beau (and father of their two young children – Harlow Winter Kate Madden and Sparrow James Midnight Madden) when Madden gave Richie a gorgeous 4 carat diamond engagement ring made by jewelry designer, and celebrity favorite, Neil Lane. Nicole Richie actually designed the engagement ring together with the famous designer, and debuted the stunning piece of jewelry to the world on a taping of the Late Show with David Letterman.

Nicole Richie, whose semi-autobiographical novel is entitled The Truth About Diamonds, has always been a gemstone obsessed girl! Well, what’s a year in review without a little literary shock at the spendthrift nature of some of the world’s most famous, or infamous, public figures? When we flip through the yearbook of those most memorable moments in casual spending and measuring of celebrity jewelry and fortune, no giant shopping spree of the latest celebutante matches up to the notorious Imelda Marcos whose history is rife with squander, and whose every public move is the closest to a modern-day Marie Antoinette that we have ever seen. Imelda Marcos, beauty queen and widow of Ferdinand Marcos, the famously wastrel former president of the Philippines, gave a special performance for the public, as she stood on her balcony soon after her 80th birthday this past year. She announced that she is completely broke…while prominently displaying a 22 carat diamond ring on her finger.

Of course, most of us are unlikely to ever lay eyes on a 5 carat diamond ring, much less a 22 carat diamond ring, in our lives…but of course we should feel very sorry for the aging financial tyrant because clearly she suffers greatly, despite her display of this seemingly meaningless wealth. The diamond ring, she said, is actually an engagement ring from her late husband, a diamond gift given to her on their engagement 55 years ago. Ferdinand Marcos, who was the president of the Philippines for 8 years in the late 60′s and early 70′s, is now legendary for his legacy of embezzlement, ill-gotten wealth, and governmental policies which seemed to be the actions of a man creating his own personal dynasty despite the incredible poverty of the people who helped to elect him. For years we have enjoyed a long list of amusing and sometimes tasteless events from the Marcos family involving unethically acquired wealth and dishonorable spending, always defended by Imelda with little remorse.

This interview came on the back of demands Imelda Marcos has made that her jewelry, which holds an estimated worth of $300 million, be returned to her, rather than sold by the Philippine government. She says that she would keep the jewelry as a national treasure. Of course. One of the more noteworthy pieces of jewelry in the collection is a 150.01 carat ruby pendant ringed in diamonds. The ruby itself is larger than an average person’s thumb. Perhaps the 22-carat diamond ring on her wrinkled finger doesn’t seem like such a large piece of wealth to Ferdinand’s spoiled wife, who for years was the owner of one of the world’s most extravagant jewelry collections. Anyway, as usual the world must enjoy the entertainment of those whose comprehension of wealth and poverty is beyond the recognition of all reasonable people. As Imelda Marcos said from her luxurious balcony in Manila, “All the beautiful things I gave …am I being persecuted for that?” Of course you are, Imelda. And hopefully when all is said and done, you’ll have a little more appreciation for that tiny diamond ring you wear.

Mere months after finalizing his divorce from Linda Bollea, Hulk Hogan has presented his girlfriend, Jennifer McDaniel, with a massive diamond engagement ring! McDaniel was spotted in LAX rocking a large diamond ring on her left hand. According to reports, it won’t be long before the two blond body builders are walking down the aisle.

Hulk Hogan, the famous bleach-blond professional wrestler, whose real name is Terry Gene Bollea, has been in the midst of a sticky divorce for two long years now. The couple “wrestled” over the division of assets, and various other uncomfortable issues. The divorce was so painful for Hogan that, according to reports, he was thrown into deep depression. He even admitted to contemplating suicide in 2007, when his wife filed for divorce.

About a year into the divorce, Jennifer McDaniel, twenty-five, and Hulk Hogan, fifty-six, began dating. They officially announced their romantic relationship in April of 2008 when they vacationed together in Miami, Florida. Apparently things between the platinum-haired pair got heavy pretty quick.

It was Fox News that reported McDaniel’s love tattoo which she got in September after professing her undying love for the sensational wrestler. Mc Daniel’s inked his first name, Terry, on the inside of her right wrist. That was probably the first sign that a diamond engagement ring was soon to follow.

Hulk Hogan’s engagement may come as a surprise to many of his fans due to the fact that his recently revived celebrity status was spurred by the popular family reality show Hogan Knows Best. The show aired on VHI from 2005 – 2007. Hogan Knows Best followed the family life of the professional wrestler, his wife and two children. However, his marriage to Ms. Bollea was rightly portrayed on the show as troubled and relatively dysfunctional. In fact, by the end of the series, reports that Hogan had cheated on Linda had been leaked to the media and were eventually confirmed.

Hulk Hogan described his marriage to ex-wife Linda Bollea as “toxic and very negative”. He continued by saying that “Jennifer is just the opposite; she doesn’t drink or get high on drugs.” It sounds like a very clean and hygienic relationship to me.* When spotted at LAX, Hulk Hogan seemed more than happy to point out his girlfriend’s new diamond ring and made plenty of hints at engagement, saying things like “Check out that left hand” and “That could be the new Mrs. Hogan.”

No details have been released yet regarding the diamond engagement ring such as the diamond’s carat weight, the diamond’s color, or the style of the ring setting. However, one could only imagine that a man like Hulk Hogan, notorious for his wild costumes and extravagant style, picked out an equally extravagant diamond engagement ring for his new bride-to-be.

Chelsea Clinton’s Engaged But Where’s The Engagement Ring?

This time the rumors are true: Chelsea Clinton is engaged! The daughter of former President Bill Clinton and current Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton finally announced her engagement to Marc Mezvinsky, her long time boyfriend. The couple sent a mass e-mail message out to their friends and family on Friday, November 27th to announce their engagement. Yes, mass e-mailing your engagement announcement is a bit tacky, but at least they apologized for it. I have to say, I had expected a bit more class from such a well known semi-political figure, but I guess I’ll get over it. And speaking of expectations, where’s the impressive diamond engagement ring we’ve all been waiting for?

Their e-mail specifically denied rumors that she and Marc Mezvinsky had already been engaged and had married this past summer. That means that all of those reports of a wedding in Martha’s Vineyard last summer, including engagement rings and wedding bands, were entirely fabricated. According to their announcement, the wedding will be held sometime this coming summer, although no further details were released. Despite their official announcement, Clinton still hasn’t been caught sporting an engagement ring or anything diamond-studded. I’m biting at the bit to see what Chelsea Clinton’s diamond engagement ring is going to look like.

Despite the fact that they come from high-profile families, Chelsea Clinton has done her best to stay out of the public eye since childhood. As the type of engagement ring a woman wears should reflect her personal style, I’d expect her private nature to have some influence on the style of her engagement ring. If I had to guess, he’ll get her a thin, traditional classic solitaire diamond engagement ring. I’m imagining a simple, classy, and low-profile engagement ring with a nice sized rock.

Clinton and Mezvinsky have been good friends since high school and some years after graduation became romantically involved. According to reports, the 29 year-old only child recently left her New York based consulting firm to return to school. You can’t argue that she’s been lucky in the brainy-gene department. This year she began studying towards a degree in public health from Columbia University. Her fiancé, 31 year old Mr. Mezvinsky isn’t lacking in the brains department either. He is a former Goldman Sachs investment banker and is now working at 3G Capital Management.

The newly engaged couple certainly seems to have a lot in common with one another. Like Chelsea, Mr. Mezvinsky is the son of two Democratic politicians who also ran into some difficulties. His father, Ed Mezvinsky, served as an Iowa Representative from 1973 to 1977 but was later indicted and convicted of defrauding investors. He was sentenced to about six years in prison of which he served nearly 5 years. Mr. Mezvinsky’s mother, Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky, served as a Pennsylvania Representative from 1993 to 1995. She lost in her re-election campaign after she voted in favor of President Clinton’s 1993 budget plan, a divisive issue at the time. Sounds to me like these two have lots to talk about.

Despite their similarities, there is one large difference – their religion. Apparently, the wedding will be geared towards an interfaith marriage. Ms. Clinton was raised as a Christian while Mr. Mezvinsky is of the Jewish faith. No one in the family has agreed to comment on this aspect of their engagement which is hardly surprising. I’m sure that it will have a minimal impact on the ambiance of the exciting event!

Man Drops Diamond Engagement Ring from Hot Air Balloon

You’d think a person would be careful enough with a precious diamond ring not to drop it from a hot air balloon – especially in the midst of a wedding proposal! But that is exactly what happened to Ohioan James Ng.

Seven days ago, Ng had all the pieces in place for the perfect proposal. He had organized a surprise hot air balloon ride with his girlfriend, Sonya Bostic, to make the moment memorable and romantic.

At about 500 feet above West Brach State Park, the 26 year old church pastor decided to make his move. Ng reached for his camera case where he had hidden the box holding the one-carat diamond engagement ring. But as he pulled out the case, he watched in horror when it clumsily slipped out of his hands and toppled down into the woods below.

According to Ng, the case seemed to have just popped over the edge. It hit a tree, fluttered around and spun all the way down. The proposal plans were destroyed and the diamond engagement ring was seemingly lost forever.

Ng couldn’t believe it. After crying out ” Oh no, what’s the name of this lake? What’s the name of this lake?!” Sonya Bostic caught on. She immediately knew that her engagement ring had been lost. So Ng went on with the wedding proposal, dropped down on one knee in all of his desperation, and Bostic said yes. If Ng set out to organize a memorable proposal, he’d done that and more.

Once the newly engaged couple landed, they immediately started researching the West Branch State Park. They spoke with the balloon company, and tried to get a sense of where the case might have dropped. It was all very methodical and organized. After using Google Maps to recreate the route of the balloon and sitting for hours with friends to plot possible flight paths, Ng went on foot to search for the lost camera case holding the precious diamond engagement ring. He broke down his search into grids and scoured the ground for a full week.

In the meantime, Ng tried to find a way to make the loss of the diamond engagement ring up to his new fiancé. He tied a twist-tie around her finger before going to Wal-Mart to buy a nine dollar temporary replacement ring. I guess if that’s the best he could do, then it has to be considered romantic, right? * Well, after seven days of searching the woods, Ng and a friend spotted the camera bag in dense brush. Amazingly, of all the items that had been in the camera case – camera, film, lenses and all, the only thing that remained in the case was the small box with the diamond engagement ring. Everything else had spilled out during the turbulent fall. Ng is sure that it was a miracle from God.

Yes, miraculously, Ng recovered a whole year’s worth of savings in that diamond ring, and was able to propose more gracefully. He got back down on his knee, put the diamond engagement ring on her finger, and it fit perfectly.
